Farmlands Trust Board of Directors announces its inaugural Patron

SAANICHTON – The Farmlands Trust Society (FLT) is pleased to announce that Carol Pickup has accepted our invitation to become the first Patron of our not-for-profit charitable organization.
As an individual, Carol has earned the highest respect for her public and community service in Greater Victoria, and exemplifies the very attributes and organizational values that the FLT requires in reaching our goals and objectives: honouring heritage; building relationships; harmonizing First Nations interests; growing good food; embracing stewardship; and engaging in charity initiatives.
Carol’s experience in many governing bodies of various organizations will be valuable in assisting the FLT in pursuing its activities in preserving farmland and its associated efforts towards regional food sustainability (see attached biography).
By joining the FLT team, Carol will lend her support and knowledge to a vital and growing organization in Greater Victoria. We look forward to a happy and fruitful association.

About the Farmlands Trust (Greater Victoria) Society
Established in 2008, The Farmlands Trust (Greater Victoria) Society is a community-based not-for-profit charitable society dedicated to the preservation of farmland and the enhancement of food security in Greater Victoria. Specifically, the FLT is committed to promoting agriculture by acquiring, managing and leasing land for farmland; educating farmers and the public on the benefits and practices of locally produced agriculture; and relieving poverty in the Greater Victoria region by operating and supporting programs that provide food from local farms to persons in need.

Biography: Carol Pickup, inaugural FLT Patron
Carol is a resident of Saanich and worked as a Registered Nurse at the Royal Jubilee Hospital from 1961 – 1990. Ms. Pickup is also an active community member, having held key community positions such as
Hospital Board Trustee, Victoria General Hospital 1973-1979
Trustee, Greater Victoria School District 1977-1985 (Chair for three years)
Alderman/Councillor, Saanich 1987-1993, 1996-2005 Chaired Arts Committee, Healthy Saanich Committee, Environment Committee
CRD Board Member (1990-1993, 1996-1998, 2000-2005); served as Chair of CRD Housing Corporation, Chair of Health Committee and CRD appointee to Interim Capital Health Council, Vice-chair Regional Growth Strategy, CRD Arts Committee and CRD Environment Committee
Saanich Volunteer Services Society (President from 1993-1996)
Co-chair South Island Health Coalition until 2008
The Land Conservancy Board (Chair, Human Resources Committee)
Chair, Saanich Peninsula Health Association (2009-2011)
